Exotic applications of liquid crystals (English)

This paper reviews both old and new applications of liquid crystals involving a good deal of mathematical modelling. The author is mainly interested in surface dynamics. Using diluting the surface effects in a thin boundary layer the author applies this method to a wide range of surface phenomena, spanning from the optical properties of nematic liquid crystals with potential applications in video displays to the dynamics of lyotropic phases.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0970.62003].
