The authors start from a mixed variational formulation combined with the Helmholtz decomposition of transverse shear strain, which has been analyzed by \textit{F. Brezzi} and \textit{M. Fortin} [Math. Comput. 47, 151-158 (1986; Zbl 0596.73058)]. Several least-squares functionals are proposed, involving weighted \(H^{-1}\) and \(L^2\)-norms. The ellipticity and some error estimates are proven, provided the exact solution is regular enough. The cases of clamped or completely free plate boundary are considered separately.
