A brief survey of basic results and open problems of the theory of polynomials is presented. Among others, the author discusses Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, Serre's conjecture and its solution given by A. A. Suslin and D. G. Quillen, and the Jacobian conjecture.NEWLINENEWLINEThe article is based on a lecture given by the author for secondary school teachers in the framework of the ``International Soros Science Educational Program'' and is aimed at presenting contemporary developments in mathematics on an elementary level understandable for secondary school teachers and pupils.
