First the main chronological reference points from 1883 to 1998 of the Romanian Mathematical Society in form of a year by year directed list are given. In the sight of the author there exists an identity NEWLINE\[NEWLINE\text{Romanian Mathematical Society \(\equiv\) Gazeta Matematicâ}NEWLINE\]NEWLINE (the ``Gazeta Matematicâ'' is the oldest and most respectable Romanian journal on elementary mathematics, which has been issued continuously as a monthly ever since its foundation in 1885) and therefore many informations about this journal follow, including facsimiles of cover pages and lists of contents. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe first competition in Romania for primary-school students was organized in Bucharest in 1885. A National Mathematical Olympiad (NMO) at a higher level was organized in 1949 and the first International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1959 in Braşov and Bucharest. Meanwhile more than 40 IMOs took place in many countries (1999 again in Bucharest). NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINESome more and detailed informations about the results of the Romanian teams are included.
