Estimation-theoretic analysis of neuronal coding strategies (English)

In this book, the problem of neuronal coding is analysed. While the framework of neural coding strategies and cross-correlation introduced in Section 3 is rather general, the author illustrated the results so far only for one specific, somewhat simplified neuronal network with identical neurons. In Section 4, some extensions of the neuronal coding strategies (such as multi-dimensional encoding strategies, highly irregular firing of cortical cells, energy efficient neuronal codes, population coding of visual stimuli, etc.) are discussed. More advanced neuronal coding (Section 5) is defined by a time-dependent stimulus. Thus, the optimal linear reconstruction of motion patterns is described by a spike-triggered average. Some new methods of time-dependent stimuli (among others cat retinal coding, cortical population coding, population coding of motion patterns) are presented.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe book is abundant with examples and solutions. The author gives recommendations for the order of reading, and the book is also suited for a reference book thanks to several appendices. The book really keeps its promises.
