This is a useful first and short biographical overview of 48 pages over mathematicians in Norway, beginning with C. Wessel, who gave a geometrical representation of complex numbers, and focussing on the 19th century. The main persons described are Niels Henrik Abel and number theorist Axel Thue. Shorter notes are dedicated to Christopher Hansteen, Bernt Holmboe, Ole Jacob Broch, Carl Anton Bjerknes, Ludvig Sylow, Elling Holst, Sophus Lie of the 19th century, and to Vilhelm Bjerknes, Carl Störmer, Poul Heegard (who came from Denmark), Richard Birkeland, Ralph Tambs Lyche, Henrik Selberg, Viggo Brun, and Atle Selberg of the 20th century. Literature is not added, however portraits of the older mathematicians (except Wessel) and some of the younger ones are included. Additional and updated information by the same author, as far as mathematicians at the then dominating university of Kristiania/Oslo are concerned, can be found on the following website:NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEhttp://www.math.uio.no/\(\sim\)bentb/Oslomat/Oslomat.html.
