Thomas Bugge's journal of a voyage through Germany, Holland and England, 1777 (English)
0 references
The paper deals with England's reputation among scientists in the 18th century. After the Seven Years War travels of scientists started. The author mentions the travels of the astronomers Lalande and Jean Bernoulli. The director of the observatory in Copenhagen, the mathematician Thomas Bugge, went to England via Germany and Holland in 1777. He wanted primarily to study observatories in London, Oxford, Cambridge and Richmond and their instruments. It is interesting that almost all new instruments that were installed after this journey were either bought in England or were constructed by a local instrument maker in accordance with Bugge's instructions. A description of illumination of wires in transit instruments and of a spirit level is given.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0970.00008].
