Priority claims and mathematical values: Disputes over quaternions at the end of the nineteenth century (English)
0 references
As the title indicates, this long paper is on disputes over quaternions at the end of the Nineteenth Century. It begins with an introduction on priority and values in the case of Wessel as the first to arrive at a satisfactory geometric representation of complex numbers. The titles of the subsequent sections are ``The quaternion priority question'', ``The background to Klein's claim. Gauss, Klein and Sommerfield'', ``Tait's criticism of Klein'' and ``Conclusion''. After reading the whole paper, only one question lingers -- what for all this exercise?NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0970.00008].
