The large \(N\) limit of superconformal field theory and anti-de Sitter supergravity (English)

The paper traces the developments in the recently proposed duality correspondence between superconformal Yang-Mills theory and Type II string theory on an anti-de Sitter space times a compact space. It discusses in detail the correspondence between \(N=4,d=4\) superconformal Yang-Mills theory and \(\text{AdS}_5\times S^5\) spacetime; as well, it presents the recently observed duality between the \(N=1\), \(d=4\) superconformal Yang-Mills theory on three-branes at Calabi-Yau singularity and \(\text{AdS}_5\times X_5\) space-time, where \(X_5=(SU(2)\times SU(2))/U(1)\) is the simplest example of conifold. At the end a thorough discussion on the most recent observations on the considered duality is given, leading to a possible approach for studying the large \(N\) limit of the conformal field theories.
