Almost abelian categories (English)

The author calls almost abelian those additive categories with finite (bi)products, kernels and pullback-stable cokernels in which every morphism has a (cokernel, mono)- and a (epi, kernel)-factorization. Hence, in modern terminology, they are in particular Barr-regular and, as the author shows, Bourn-protomodular, and also satisfy the dual conditions. The paper provides a thorough structure theory for almost abelian categories, with many references to examples outside the realm of abelian category theory.
