The author generalizes a new integral equation approach developed for the scalar case in his preceding paper [ibid., 1675-1684 (2000; Zbl 1024.78002)] to the diffraction of electromagnetic plane waves by a hole in a perfectly reflecting screen. Explicit formulas are given for the electric field with an application to the diffraction by a slit. This approach overcomes shortcomings of the Kirchhoff integral and can be further developed to time-dependent pulses.
