The book presents an introduction to the theory of laser material processing. It starts with physical principles that are needed for the processing and formulates them in mathematical terms. The main aim is to apply the general principles to the simple models of material processing by a relatively high power laser beam. However, the principles and methods described in the book are very general and can find application in many different fields.NEWLINENEWLINEThe first two chapters, Thermal modeling and Physical principles, are introductory, and they deal with governing equations and boundary conditions. The next three chapters, The temperature in blocks and plates, Time-dependent solutions in blocks and Moving boundary problems, primarily deal with general properties of various solutions of basic equations. The last three chapters, Simple models of laser keyhole welding, The fluid regions in keyhole welding and Thermoelastic problems, are devoted to more specific applications.NEWLINENEWLINEThe book is written very transparently, it uses adequate mathematical sophistication and physical background. It can be recommended to engineers and material scientists at the Ms. or Ph.D. level, or to mathematicians interesting in technological problems.
