This paper deals with three topics taken from structural mechanics, mainly related civil engineering: 1) structural stability criterion based on a consistent linearization of complex nonlinear load-displacement paths; 2) adaptive finite element analysis of reinforced concrete shells including elastic-plastic effects; 3) assessment of safety degrees in shotcrete tunnel shells using a hybrid method based on three-dimensional measurement of displacements. The common numerical tool for these problems is the finite element method. Some illustrative numerical results are included, which appear to be effective for design of actual structures.
