This paper is the introduction to a special issue on quantitative feedback theory (QFT) and is a reprint of a survey paper by \textit{I. Horowitz} [Int. J. Control 53, 255--291 (1991; Zbl 0733.93024)]. The paper presents a general survey of QFT, covering single input, single output and multivariable design for uncertain linear and nonlinear systems. It includes over one hundred references to the field.
