    It is shown that a compactum \(X\) has cohomological dimension 1 with respect to a finitely generated nilpotent group \(G\) whenever it has cohomological dimension 1 with respect to the abelianization of \(G\). This result is applied to show that for a finite-dimensional compactum \(X\) and a CW-complex \(M\) with finitely generated nilpotent homotopy groups the following conditions are equivalent: (1) \(\text{ dim} X\leq M\); (2) \(\text{ dim} X\leq \text{ SP}^\infty M\); (3) \(\text{ dim}_{H_i(M)}\leq i\) for all \(i>0\); (4) \(\text{ dim}_{\pi_i(M)}\leq i\) for all \(i>0\).
