The author was about to retire as founder Executive Secretary of the National Association of Mathematicians, an organisation with membership focussed upon ethnic minorities, especially African Americans, in the USA. The first part of his article comprises short biographies of two chemists: Alfred Nobel, and the American academic H. R. C. McBay. The second part gives statistics exhibiting the relatively modest scale of achievements in research-level mathematics among African Americans, and an exhortation to readers to promote mathematical training and advancement among that cohort.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0972.00026].
