José Morgado (1921--2003) was a very influential Portuguese mathematician. He was equally concerned with Mathematics Education and published a number of very imaginative articles about the ways of doing mathematics. In this paper, he traces a very brief history of how important the practice of observation in the works of Gauss, Sylvester and Weierstrass was.
