The authors present an extensive survey of characteristically nilpotent Lie algebras (CNLA) covering the work of the last fifty years. The aspects of CNLA surveyed are structural properties, subspaces of CNLA, CNLA obtained from nilradicals of Borel subalgebras, characteristically nilpotent filiform Lie algebras, Lie algebras of type \(Q\) and its deformations, nilpotent Lie algebras and rigidity, affine structures over Lie algebras and associative characteristically nilpotent Lie algebras.
