The authors consider the problem of interaction of a drop with a microscopic particle. The particular case of an axisymmetric sessile drop and a spherical particle is studied under axisymmetric variations. The authors derive a stability criterion based on a new energy functional which incorporates the colloidal interaction of the drop with the particle. The authors conjecture, in particular, that instabilities occur if the shape of drop profile is infinite.
