The author studies the space and time decay rates for strong solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. Obtained rates are the same as those of the heat equation. This improves the earlier results [\textit{C. Amrouche}, \textit{V. Girault}, \textit{M. E. Schonbek}, \textit{T. P. Schonbek}, SIAM J. Math. Anal. 31, 740-753 (2000; Zbl 0986.35085); \textit{M. E. Schonbek}, in: Sequeira, Adélia (ed.) et al., Applied nonlinear analysis, Kluwer/Plenum, New York, 505-512 (1999; Zbl 0954.35131)] by sharpening the exponents, by extending the range of validity in the space variable exponent and by removing restriction on the space dimension. The obtained result answers a question raised by M. E. Schonbek in the cited publication.
