The metaphor of tool and foundation of mathematics (English)

This is a brief preview of ideas that the author expects to develop fuller in the future. In addition to the notion of ``tool'' as a metaphor, another idea is using a mathematical discussion in an internet mailing list as an investigative resource. Presumably without participating in the discussion, the author observes the exchanges in foundation-of-mathematics group (http://www.math.psu.edu/simpson) as members (such as Harvey Friedman, Robert Tragesser, and Steve Simpson) discuss category theory versus set theory as a foundation of mathematics. In this context, the author sees much of the conflict coming from misunderstandings of how such metaphors as ``tool'' are used by the discussants.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0976.00021].
