The performance of the absolute nodal coordinate formulation in the large deformation analysis of flexible multibody applications is examined and compared with the floating frame of reference formulation and existing incremented methods. An efficient implementation of the absolute nodal coordinate formulation, based on a Cholesky transformation, that leads to optimum sparse matrix structure of flexible multibody equations, is discussed. Numerical results for several structural and multibody applications were presented in a previous investigation in order to demonstrate the use of the absolute nodal coordinate formulation in the analysis of small and large deformation problems. The generalization of the absolute nodal coordinate formulation to the three-dimensional analysis as well as the analysis of plates and shells are discussed in this paper.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0972.00063].
