This book, which grew out of the lectures from the one-semester Budapest Semesters in Mathematics, designed for North American undergraduate students, contains some of the most fascinating results in mathematics which can be presented to a novice audience, together with the shortest and most elementary proofs imaginable, followed by sets of moderately challenging problems. It contains the material which every mathematics major should have -- but often hasn't -- encountered, such as ruler and compass constructions, transcendental numbers, Hamel bases, the Cantor set, the Banach-Tarski paradox, the Peano curve, Borel sets.
