Bowen-Franks groups as an invariant for flow equivalence of subshifts (English)

The author shows that \(K\)-groups and Bowen-Franks groups [\textit{R. Bowen} and \textit{J. Franks}, Ann. Math. (2) 106, 73--92 (1977; Zbl 0375.58018)] are invariants for flow equivalence of subshifts. Some similar but weaker results were known before [\textit{B. Parry} and \textit{D. Sullivan}, Topology 14, 297--299 (1975; Zbl 0314.54045)] and their proofs were based on \(C^*\)-algebra techniques. Here the author applies arguments from symbolic dynamics. Using this result he presents examples of non-sofic subshifts that are not flow equivalent.
