[For the review of the first ed. see (1997; Zbl 0908.76001).] NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe book consists of five chapters. The first one describes general theses for direct numerical simulation of developed free shear turbulence, and includes the requirements for computers on which direct numerical simulation can be performed. This chapter also gives diagrams of Reynolds numbers for the flows occurring in everyday practice, discusses turbulence patterns obtained experimentally, and presents the main theses of the authors' computation approach. The second chapter is devoted to the coherent structure computation in turbulence, including examples of such computation for the flow behind a cylinder, a rotating plate, and a car-shaped body. Here the authors also discuss the modeling of stochastic turbulence. In the third chapter, the simulation of transition regime is described. The chaotic phase and the Rayleigh-Taylor and Richtmyer-Meshkov instabilities are investigated in the fourth chapter, and finally, in the fifth chapter, the axiomatic model of fully developed turbulence is explained.
