This is a very fine essay on the nature of music. The author explains to laymen his personal view of some characteristics, ingredients, properties, features, and phenomena of music on an elementary level. In particular, he removes some common wrong ideas and misunderstandings concerning the nature of acoustic waves as perceived by the human ear. The author is a professional mathematician and physicist, but the reader feels that he really likes music and (therefore) wants it to remain what it is, a field on its own, without trying to construct highly artificial connections between music and mathematics, say, as other authors still try to do.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0971.00011].
