Heteroclinic cycles and fluid motions in rotating spheres (English)
    0 references
For classical Bénard problem in rotating spheres the author considers conditions for stability using the idea that heteroclinic cycles serve as a model for metastable behaviour. Based on this theory, it is not excluded that even the mechanism of polarity reversals for Earth magnetic field can once be enlightened. The present paper refers to fluid mechanics and contains a brief discussion of center manifold reduction, critical modes and mode interaction. The author also discusses the dynamics in the non-rotating case, heteroclinic cycles in mode interactions, the dynamics for 1-2-mode interactions, and the rotation as a symmetry breaking perturbation. The author mentions ca. 30 papers which deal with different items of this research.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0973.00055].
