Review of nonlinear model predictive control applications (English)

A brief overview of nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) theory is presented, and recent industrial NMPC applications are discussed. The focus is on the NMPC products that are commercially available and have had the widest impact on NMPC practice. The specific application of each of the discussed products is illustrated on examples of batch reactors, pulverised coal fired boilers, ammonia plants, and polymerisation processes. Also, the most significant obstacles to NMPC applications are outlined. Some of them: there is still no systematic approach for building models for NMPC, design guidelines are needed to indicate in which application cases the preference for NMPC is obvious, none of the currently available NMPC algorithms includes the terminal state constraints or infinite prediction horizon required by control theory for nominal stability.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0976.00019].
