Jose Anastácio da Cunha (1744-1787) may be considered as one of the predecessors of reforms that radically transformed analysis in the first half of the 19th century. His ``Principios Mathematics'' published in Lisbon in 1790 were written in a rigorous style quite unusual for contemporary mathematics. The present authors try to understand the cause for the undeserved small influence that the book of da Cunha had in Portugal and abroad.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0978.00017].
