Cognitive modelling and the resolution of problems (English)

This book tries to give answers to the following questions: what is the nature and the role of knowledge when solving a problem? How can knowledge be modeled? How can the process of problem solving be controlled? It does so in four chapters. The first one, titled sur la piste de connaissance, gives a short review of several methods and paradigms of problem solving, e.g. logical deduction, expert systems, distributed resolution, genetic algorithms. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe second chapter models knowledge resting on the fundamental notions of concepts, relations and semantic constraints. These notions are analyzed in detail. Concepts are defined extensionally, intensionally and by properties, the investigation of relations treats several aspects which are common in the object oriented paradigm. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe third chapter analyses the knowledge concerned with problem solving. At first a classification of problems is given. Then the notion of task is defined and modeled. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe last chapter treats knowledge bases. After reviewing the principles and limits of historical approaches the principles of a constructive method for developing a cognitive model are given.
