[For a review of the original see Zbl 0919.00001.]NEWLINENEWLINEIt is a very welcome fact that this nice book is also available in German because it presents core parts of modern mathematics in a manner which is accessible to a broad educated public.NEWLINENEWLINEThe translation into German is well made, and the translator has fully mastered the German mathematical terminology. Unfortunately, to some extent, it is nothing but a translation: so for the largest known Mersenne prime the value of 1994 is given. Here and at a few other places some more recent information had been welcome. Also some of the pictures appear in an unfortunately small size, caused by the pocket size of the book. But both these points are not really important. The book remains a very nice one also with these small inconveniencies.
