The large, the small and the human mind (English)

The present book is a translation of the English original from 1997 (see Zbl 0927.00007). It is a general discussion about cosmology in relation to quantum theory and black holes and their interpretation, written from a quite personal point of view of the author. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINECosmological models are presented in comparison with pictures designed by M. C. Escher. The abilities of human mind in comparison with computer programs is discussed, too -- thus leading to new insights about the non-predictive power of any quantum theory. Penrose describes also his FAPP-point of view: ``for all practical purposes'' one may assume some physical statements to be valid even if their non-validity is known.
