Given a class \(\mathcal E\) of deformations acting on a compact submanifold \(M\), one says that \(M\) satisfies the variational minimal principle in the class \(\mathcal E\) if \(M\) is a critical point of the area functional among all deformations from \(\mathcal E\). It is shown that some compact submanifolds are characterized by a variational minimal principle.
