In this paper, macroelements for spline approximation are constructed on quadrangulations for any prescribed smoothness. The elements depend only on natural derivative information. The dimension of the spline spaces that results is identified in the two main theorems for even and odd degree of smoothness. Several examples are provided, and a final theorem on the approximation order achievable with these splines is given.
