Variational principles for propagation speeds in inhomogeneous media (English)

Front propagation speed in reactive flows with inhomogeneities is investigated. A variational characterization of the front speed for reaction-diffusion-advection equations in periodically heterogeneous media is proved. The indicated method can be applied to any problem obeying a maximum principle. Three examples are analyzed. The effects of the inhomogeneous medium are discussed.
