The star is treated as a quantum Fermi system without the explicit use of an equation of state. The theory starts from a quantum formulation for noninteracting fermions at zero Kelvin. Single-particle solutions of the Dirac equations are filled with neutrons in such a way that the mass of the star is a minimum constrained by Einstein's equations of general relativity.
