This is the second edition of the book first published in 1980 by the Leningrad State University. It is based on the lectures on quantum mechanics given by the authors in that university from 1968 for students in mathematics. The program of the course was developed by the first author and, as it is mentioned in the preface, ``in the basement of the approach taken lies the statement that quantum and classical mechanics are different realizations of the same abstract mathematical structure.'' Hence the lectures start with an exposition of the fundamentals of classical mechanics via the Poisson algebra of ``observables'' and finally lead to explanation of the limit transition from quantum mechanics to classical mechanics. The book contains an introduction to quantum mechanics including many famous physical examples and basic facts of the representation theory of unitary groups and the scattering theory for the Schrödinger operator.
