This book gives a first overview over Java and addresses to developers as well as to managers interested in the technology an possible applications. Beginning with short notes about the origin of Java and its impact on the software market the author then provides an introduction to the underlying technologies Internet and object-orientedness. So far the reader doesn't need any prerequisites. The main part deals with Java as a programming language, related to but different from C/C++. The exposition of these differences and the deficiencies of C/C++ which they overcome assumes some knowledge of C++ and motivates the change from C++ to Java. There is an introduction into the concepts of classes and objects in Java, the virtual Java machine, the Java Development Kid and Java-applets with examples of code. Only the basics of the security concepts are told, but there are several pages about Javascript, JavaOS, JDBC, net-computers etc. The book is a good first reading on Java and an appetizer for further studies.
