This book presents the sentinel method, an implementation of the least squares method particularly well adapted to the identification of parameters in distributed ecosystems (surface water, underground water, atmosphere). The method is applied to solve environmental pollution problems containing incomplete data, especially in the initial or boundary conditions. The author considers only such environmental problems where the pollutant concentration is measured at a few points. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEStarting from these incomplete data, he shows how to identify the parameters that control the system behaviour (position of pollution sources, quantity of pollutant discharged, dispersion coefficients etc.). It appears from the examples treated in this book that provided the data are rich enough, they enable us to identify some of the unknown parameters. Partial differential equations are used for modelling the changes in the concentration of pollutant species. This monograph is intended first for graduate students and academic or industrial researchers who are interested in using the sentinel method to solve environmental problems with missing data.
