This book is devoted to the least squares method and some related questions. Some conceptually different problems are investigated in detail and reduced to the determination of the nearest to the origin point of the linear manifold. Although the book is not concerned with computational methods the third chapter deals with the projective algorithms of optimization. The book includes an English summary of 12 pages length.
