The principles of mathematics. With a new introduction by John Slater (Q2785781)

This is another in the series of reprints of Bertrand Russell's works being undertaken by the publisher. Apart from a brief introduction, it is a photographic reproduction of the second, 1937, edition (first edition 1903). Russell began the work in 1898 before being aware of Peano and Frege and thus the draft versions show his rapid absorption and eventual mastery of this emerging field of mathematical logic, culminating in the discovery of the paradox now named after him. The earliest versions were radically different from the one published and for this reason were made available in a scholarly edition of Russell's works which does not otherwise include his published books: \textit{Bertrand Russell} [Philosophical papers, 1896-1899 (The collected papers of Bertrand Russell, Vol. 2, edited by \textit{N. Griffin} and \textit{A. C. Lewis}, Unwin Hyman, London) (1990)]. Though a number of careful studies have been made also of the many changes made by Russell up to the last minute before publication, a definitive variorum edition has yet to be prepared.
