[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.]NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThis is a fundamental Handbook in Mathematics Education organised into two books (parts). Mathematics education is an international field of endeavour and in that spirit The Handbook should be helpful to anyone wishing to find out about interesting work being done in other countries. It consists of 36 originally authored chapters covering the significant aspects of the variety of practices, and the range of disciplinary interconnections, which characterise the field of mathematics education today. All chapters are organised into four sections. Well-known international scholars -- J. Kilpatrick, C. Laborde, K. Clements, and Ch. Keitel -- were given responsibility each for one section, and A. J. Bishop has collaborated with all of them. The editors have drawn upon the expertise of many competent writers and analysts, who are regular attendants at the international mathematics conferences. Each chapter has been written by one or more authors. Each section editor has provided a detailed introduction to that section. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe first section (edited by J. Kilpatrick), analyses the trends and issues related to the mathematics curriculum, and the goals, examinations, content and material resources related to that curriculum. The second section of the Handbook (edited by C. Laborde) surveys the variety of practices of mathematics teaching and learning at different levels and in different contexts. It ranges from elementary school to adult learning, and addresses the rapidly developing non-formal and informal mathematics education. The third section (edited by K. Clements) is concerned with different perspectives on, and the disciplinary contexts of mathematics education. The fourth and final section of the Handbook (edited by Ch. Keitel) is concerned with development of mathematics education. This section complements the previous section in attending to the different and professional groups. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe Handbook offers synthetic and reflective overviews on the different directions being taken in mathematics, on the current problems being faced, and on the future possibilities for development. The Handbook is devoted to teachers and students who want to know more about their subject and how it is currently being taught, to educational policy-makers, curriculum developers, researchers, to anyone working in mathematics education who wishes to broaden his/her knowledge base.
