The authors study mathematically the stability problem for waves propagating in dispersive media with perfectly matched layers. Taking into account backscattered waves, they propose a new method to remove instabilities occurring in the standard approach and apply the method in two numerical examples related to a negative index material (the Drude model) and a uniaxial anisotropic plasma medium, respectively.
