The authors show that inverse problems arising in traffic models with real time data (provided by a measuring vehicle) are generally ill-posed. They propose an alternative macroscopic model, which modifies the standard Lighthill-Whitham-Richards model and reduces to the usual Cauchy problem for a scalar conservation law. The authors establish the existence and uniqueness of a Kruzhkov entropy solution to this problem and also prove the \(L^1\)-stability of solutions under perturbations of initial data.
