Giordano Bruno greatly appreciated the so-called proportional compass invented by Fabrizio Mordente. This device had two arms with cursors that allowed for the solution of problems on measuring the circumferences, areas and angles related to a circle. Bruno felt certain that the compass made it possible to solve practically the quadrature of a circle problem. Approximations of arcs by straight lines constructed with the help of the compass induced Bruno to refute Aristotle's hypothesis on the incommensurability of infinitesimals which led him at last to his atomic theory.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1296.01006].
