The author studies the submanifold theory in terms of the Chern connection; it can also be interpreted as a kind of extrinsic volume variation. He introduces the notions of second fundamental form and mean curvature for Finsler submanifolds and establishes the fundamental equations by means of moving frames for the hypersurface case. In this situation, all geodesic spheres in manifolds with constant flag curvature are totally umbilical and have constant principal curvature and constant mean curvature. He provides an estimation of the image radius for compact submanifolds and prove that there exists no compact minimal submanifold in any complete noncompact and simply connected Finsler manifold with nonpositive flag curvature. Finally the author characterizes the Minkowski hyperplanes, Minkowski hyperspheres and Minkowski cylinders as the only hypersurfaces in Minkowski space with parallel second fundamental form.
