The authors consider an inverse scattering problem for time-harmonic electromagnetic waves by a multilayered periodic medium. The symmetry of the medium allows a formulation of the problem by a scalar two-dimensional boundary value problem considering the transverse magnetic polarization case. In particular, with respect to such a formulation, the following inverse problem is studied: from some knowledge of the near field, generated by the medium with different incident plane waves, reconstruct the periodic interfaces in the medium. The paper proposes a method for the numerical solution of this problem, which is based on a factorization of the near field operator allowing the construction of an indicator function of the layers of the unknown medium. The paper concludes with several numeral examples.
