The authors employ a variational approach to study stationary solutions for a free boundary problem modelling an idealized electrostatically actuated MEMS device which consists of an elastic plate coated with a thin dielectric film and suspended above a rigid ground plate. The stationary solutions are obtained using a constrained minimization problem. Existence of at least two stationary solutions for some values of the applied voltage is obtained.
