Replacing the multiplicative linear functionals (m.l.f) by the approximate ones the author introduces in a Banach algebra a specific type of Ransford spectrum called here an approximate spectrum. By means of, it the author obtains several generalizations of classical results in Banach algebras: the compactness of the set of approximate m.l.f, the openness of the set of almost invertible elements and some versions of the Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko theorem.
