The authors study the non-stationary Maxwell equations for inhomogeneous one-dimensional media by reduction to a Vekua-type equation for bicomplex-valued functions of a hyperbolic variable. The Vekua equation is solved by means of approximate transmutation operators. The final representations for solutions have a simple form. The computational efficiency and accuracy of the final formulas are confirmed by numerical examples.
